Farmer Dan receives: Dylan Sampson
Super Ja’Marrio Brothers receives: Brocky Purdy
Farmer Dan’s Team:
QB: Baker Mayfield
Mayfield has been a bit of a journeyman in the NFL, but with the Buccaneers in 2023, he’s had a chance to prove himself once again as a starter. He’s shown flashes of his old form, though he’s not generally viewed as a QB1 in fantasy. He’s more of a low-end QB2 with some upside, but also potential for volatility week-to-week. He could be a stopgap option in a redraft league, especially if you’re looking for a solid filler at QB.
Trade: Brock Purdy for Dylan Sampson
- Brock Purdy: Brock Purdy was the feel-good story of the 2022 NFL season. He played smart, efficient football in the 49ers offense, with a lot of weapons around him. His upside is somewhat capped in terms of fantasy production, though, due to his conservative playstyle and reliance on the talent surrounding him. He’s a safe QB2 with a high floor in a redraft league, but not a QB1.
- Dylan Sampson: Sampson is an interesting rookie or young player in this scenario. If you’re referring to the real-life Dylan Sampson, he’s a running back from Tennessee who could bring solid rushing upside if he earns a role. He’s probably not going to be a major contributor in the short term (especially if you’re in a redraft), but he could eventually carve out a role. In dynasty, though, Sampson has higher potential. He’s got long-term upside, especially if the team decides to use him in a more prominent role down the line.
Super Ja’Marrio Brothers’ Team:
QB: Dak Prescott
Dak Prescott is typically regarded as a solid QB1 in both redraft and dynasty formats. He’s shown consistent fantasy production, particularly in leagues that reward passing touchdowns. He can get a bit turnover-prone at times, but he has an extremely high ceiling, especially when paired with elite weapons like CeeDee Lamb and Tony Pollard. In redraft, he’s a top-10 QB with high-end QB1 potential. In dynasty, his value drops slightly since he’s entering his 30s, but he still has a lot of good football left in him.
Farmer Dan’s Trade Analysis:
- Redraft Value:
Giving up Brock Purdy (who is a solid QB2) for Dylan Sampson (a relatively unknown commodity who’s more of a dynasty stash than a redraft asset) doesn’t seem like a win in the short term. Sampson likely won’t offer immediate returns unless there’s an injury or a breakout in future seasons. For redraft, Farmer Dan could have used Purdy as a dependable backup QB or even a flex option if needed in deeper formats, so this trade doesn’t add immediate value to his team. Grade: C-
Farmer Dan loses a solid, if unexciting, QB2 in Purdy for an upside play that likely won’t help his current roster in redraft. - Dynasty Value:
In dynasty, Dylan Sampson has significantly more value. He’s a young running back with potential, and if he can carve out a role in a committee or as a backup (or if he gets a chance to start), he could be a solid piece in the future. However, Purdy, being a QB, does have some value in dynasty, especially if he holds the starting role with the 49ers for years to come. But, again, his upside is capped in terms of fantasy points. If Sampson turns into a more prominent player, this trade could work out in the long term for Farmer Dan. Grade: B+
It’s a risk, but it’s a calculated one. Sampson could be a great addition to Farmer Dan’s roster in dynasty leagues, assuming the development of the RB position plays out in his favor.
Super Ja’Marrio Brothers’ Perspective:
For Super Ja’Marrio Brothers, getting Brock Purdy in exchange for Dylan Sampson makes more sense in a redraft context. Purdy could be a valuable backup QB with high efficiency, and having that extra depth at QB could come in handy during injuries or bye weeks. Even though Purdy doesn’t have the same upside as Dak, he’s a solid starter for a team looking to minimize risk. Meanwhile, Dylan Sampson isn’t likely to provide much immediate value.
Redraft Grade: B
Super Ja’Marrio Brothers strengthen their QB depth without sacrificing much, especially since Sampson is an unknown and has little immediate impact.
Dynasty Grade: C+
From a dynasty standpoint, trading a young running back like Sampson (who could develop into a starter) for Purdy might be seen as a bit of a sideways move. Dak is the more important piece in the long-term QB picture, but Purdy still has some value, and Sampson’s future as a potential starting back could be more valuable in a few years. It’s an okay move but not necessarily one that helps their long-term plans.
Overall Grade:
- Farmer Dan’s Redraft Grade: C-
- Farmer Dan’s Dynasty Grade: B+
- Super Ja’Marrio Brothers’ Redraft Grade: B
- Super Ja’Marrio Brothers’ Dynasty Grade: C+
In redraft, Farmer Dan probably loses this trade, as the immediate value of Purdy outweighs the potential upside of Sampson. But in dynasty, the trade makes sense for Farmer Dan to take a shot at a young RB who might pay dividends in the future.
